Watch James Ellis' GB football squad on Eurosport Tuesday 16 July

Update 17/07/13: The British squad took silver in a close 3-2 match against France.

James Ellis, footyDirector of Sport Operations at Warwick, is Head Coach of the GB football team competing at the World University Games.

The World University Games or Universiade 2013, are the equivalent to the Olympic Games in the students’ world. They officially started in 1905 when the first international university games were held in the USA. This year they are taking place in Kazan, in Russia.

Both men and women's football squad reached the finals: the women's team won the gold medal last night (Monday 15 July) beating Mexico 6-2.

The men' squad, coached by James Ellis, beat Russia on penalties in front of 12,000 spectators. The Russian team is reported to be worth over £12 million with full international and Champion League players and ex-England boss and current Russia Manager Fabio Capello watching on. You can watch a short video of the game on the Eurosport website.

The final is broadcasted live today, Tuesday 16 July, on Eurosport 2 at 17:30 UK time. GB will play France, who defeated Japan (also on penalties). If GB wins, it will be the first ever time a GB squad has won gold. The best finish so far was silver at the last games in Shenzhen in China 2011, also coached by James Ellis.

James Ellis said:

"The pressure's off now really. We set the target of a medal, and I'd rather play France than Japan, as this is their first time in the final, our second, and we have a bit of experience in the side. So we're going out there to win the game and the gold."
