Brief Encounter - Katie Chevis
Position: Welfare and Equal Opportunities Sabbatical Officer for the Students Union.
Which means: I'm the first port of call for student enquiries and if I can’t help then I’ll find them someone who can. I coordinate campaigns about issues that students will be better off for knowing; for example safe sex, responsible drinking and effective house hunting. It is my responsibility to ensure that equal opportunities are upheld. I also deal with students case work and represent the Union in a number of University committees.
Favourite phrase: Here we go…
Least favourite phrase: Can’t do it.
Life before Warwick: A-levels at Churchers, Petersfield.
Smartest career move: Taking myself seriously! Realising I could be somebody and rolling with it.
Best thing about working at Warwick: The people who take you seriously and trust you to do a good job at the young age of 21! Also the potential to make the role all it can be. The Union is a wonderful thing!
Worst thing about working at Warwick: So far loving the job and not disillusioned so not answering this one!
People are always surprised to learn this about me, but... I'm not bubbly and happy all the time - I can get stressed and grumpy too!
As a young child what did you want to be as a "grown-up"? I don’t remember and neither do my parents. I guess I was never a driven child! I did read a lot of pony books so possibly I wanted to be top notch rider but that was never going to happen because I wasn’t very good!
Now that you are grown-up what would be your "dream job"? To do a PhD in counselling psychology and work with drug and alcohol abusers.
Major achievement to date? Not so much winning Sabb, although that was fantastic, but how I conducted myself during the week because it showed me I did have the confidence to do well.
If you could change one thing in the University overnight, what would it be? I’d get the Union a bigger and better building.
Which person inspires you most, and why? My parents because they try so hard to do their best.
Your all-time favourite record or piece of music? Tricky! Depends on my mood. I love Kenny Rogers ‘Small Dark cloud’ and Khaled’s ‘Aicha’
