Position: Resource Management Coordinator

Which means: I coordinate and put into place the new University of Warwick schemes for recycling waste materials (recyclates) throughout the University. The first and current scheme involves paper and card.

Favourite phrase: With determination, most things can be achieved.

Least favourite phrase: … but it’s not economical to do so.

Magazines read: New Scientist, Royal Horticultural Society journal, Change your World and Earthmatters (Friends of the Earth); Woodland Trust magazine.

Life before Warwick: Civil Service, Self-Employment, Temping.

Smartest career move: Leaving the Civil Service.

Best thing about working at Warwick: The vast diversity of interesting people.

Worst thing about working at Warwick: The internal traffic and traffic crawling past the three campuses.

Current ambitionTo achieve 100% recycling of recyclable materials produced by the University. It’s more important however, to reduce use of materials and to reuse them.

People are always surprised to learn this about me, but...… two friends and I once escorted a scarecrow called ‘Rags’ by train to London and carried it up and down escalators, on the Underground and through London streets to the House of Commons to take part in a demo against GM Agriculture.

As a young child what did you want to be as a "grown-up"?A vet.

Now that you are grown-up what would be your "dream job"?I’m doing it.

What has life's experience taught you so far?Never get despondent and always keep beavering away.

Major achievement to date?After 8 years’ hard graft, a BSc Hons in Environmental Science.

What do you treasure most?Family and health.

If you could change one thing in the University overnight, what would it be?I would love all people in the University to take to heart that they can all do something significant at work and in their private lives to counteract climate change. We have a golden opportunity to do this now since the University is positively encouraging recycling at work and even though this is a small but significant factor, it will help to slow the increase in carbon emissions.

Your favourite hobby or pastime?It’s currently growing organic vegetables.
