Laureates of Anthony N Sabga Caribbean Awards for Excellence

George SimonGeorge Simon, a former Associate Fellow at the Yesu Persaud Centre for Caribbean Studies (formerly the Centre for Caribbean Studies) and Paula Lucie-Smith, a Warwick History graduate have been announced as laureates of The Anthony N Sabga Caribbean Awards for Excellence.

George Simon was awarded in the category of Arts & Letters. George, a member of the Guyanese First Peoples nation, the Lokono, is a visual artist, archaeologist and teacher. He has set up schools in art and English in Guyana and the various countries he has visited.

Paula Lucie-SmithPaula Lucie-Smith was recognised the category of Public and Civic Contributions. Paula, a Trinidadian, is the founder and CEO of the Adult Literacy Tutors Association, ALTA, an organization which identified an enormous unacknowledged social problem of widespread illiteracy in Trinidad & Tobago, and the West Indies, and has taken significant steps to deal with it.

The purpose of the awards is to recognize significant Caribbean achievement and to encourage and to support the pursuit of excellence by Caribbean people, for the benefit of the region.
