Claire Freeman

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Warwick Medical School student Claire Freeman. Claire passed away suddenly after losing her battle with cancer.

Claire joined Warwick Medical School as a first year medic in September 2008 after achieving a 2:1 from Edinburgh University in Biomedical Sciences. Her speciality was microbiology and infection. Claire was a hard-working and conscientious student, her results in her first exams put her in the top quartile of students.

She was diagnosed with a colon tumour in early April 2009 along with liver metastases. Despite undergoing surgery and chemotherapy, Claire sadly passed away aged 24.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Nigel Thrift said: "The sudden death of a student brings great sadness to everyone who knew them. Claire was a bright and popular student with many friends in both the staff and student community. Our thoughts are with Claire’s family and friends at this difficult time.”

Claire had a facebook page which is mostly open to the world and lots of people have been in touch over the past year, keeping in contact with her. Her bubbly personality shines out from the page. http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/profile.php?v=wall&ref=search&id=61000829

University staff and support professionals are working to support those students who were close to Claire. If you would like to speak to someone at this time, there are a number of support services available. The Student Support Services website gives more details, at
