Coull Quartet - the University's Quartet in Residence

The Coull Quartet LogoYou might not be aware that the University is in the unique position of having its own resident string quartet based on campus. And in fact at Warwick the Coull Quartet will celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of their residency next year.

This September they have appointed a new administrator, Abby Corfun, to help them develop their work at the University and beyond. The four members, Roger Coull, Philip Galloway, Gustav Clarkson and Nick Roberts are all professional musicians and teachers with vast combined experience. As part of their residency they tutor student string players and work with orchestras and ensembles of the Music Centre. They also perform in concert halls across the UK and abroad, and have made a number of critically acclaimed recordings.

In addition to their residency commitments the Coull Quartet are currently working on a number of special projects that aim to move away from the traditional concert halls and hopefully attract new audiences who might otherwise not attend classical performances.

The Coull QuartetThis month they are working with a synaesthesia artist, Mark Rowan Hull, at Oxford University on a project about the relationship between music and the senses. One long term venture, funding permitting, is an exploration of the origins of chamber music with an historical recreation in an original Greenwich tavern in a collaboration with Trinity College of Music and the Meantime Brewing Company. In the local area, the Coull Quartet is beginning work on an educational scheme creating music with local primary school children on topics as diverse as nuclear fusion and the ugly duck story.

On Tuesday 7th November and Tuesday 5th December the Coull Quartet will be performing two exciting concerts in the Herbert Gallery Café, Coventry. These concerts are designed to appeal to both classical music lovers and those new to the genre. They will be relaxed after-work events held ‘in-the-round’ in the Gallery café; audience members will be encouraged to sit at tables and have a drink during the concert. The repertoire will be spirited and poignant works by Shostakovich and Beethoven in order to appeal to the gallery’s existing jazz and world music audience, and in the second concert the quartet will also premiere a new work by a music student from Coventry University.
