Couple celebrate their three degrees

Husband and wife Adam Boddison and Annunziata Videtta had reason to celebrate at this year's summer graduation ceremonies - the couple both graduated for their PhDs – the third degree for both of them. Adam and Annunziata have been at Warwick for 10 and 11 years respectively, completing their undergraduate, masters and PhD study, as well as obtaining their PGCEs, at the University.

Adam obtained his BSc Mathematics in 2003. The following year he undertook his PGCE, before moving onto teach Secondary/Primary Mathematics in Coventry whilst undertaking educational research at the University, obtaining his MA in 2005. His research, primarily self-funded, eventually culminated in a PhD in Mathematics Education in 2010.

In addition to teaching Adam has undertaken a number of roles including Lead Practitioner in Mathematics for the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust and West Midlands Area Coordinator for the Further Mathematics Support Programme. The latter role is part of a national, government-funded initiative, coordinated by Mathematics in Education and Industry (MEI) and designed to give all students access to Further Mathematics, ideally through their own school or college.

Adam recently travelled to Ghana as part of the Warwick in Africa project. His role was to coordinate a team of Mathematics teachers, including Warwick alumni, from the UK. They worked with local Mathematics teachers to enrich the curriculum and share good practice and pedagogy.

From September Adam will be seconded to a leadership role with the RSA Academy in Tipton, one of the University’s Trust Schools. His role will involve input into the teaching and learning of Mathematics, Science and Technology including a focus on Opening Minds - a competence based curriculum - and the International Baccalaureate.

Annunziata obtained a BA Joint Honours degree in German Studies and Italian from Warwick in 2003. She then undertook an MA in Italian Studies: Culture and Communication which she successfully completed in 2004. She moved onto study for her PGCE (secondary) in Modern Foreign Languages, before beginning her PhD in Italian in 2005. Upon successful completion of this, she undertook her Post-doc in Italian between 2009 and 2010 and is now an Administrative Officer for Widening Participation in the Academic Office, working on the Pathways to Law programme.

Whilst studying for her degrees, Annunziata taught Italian at the Language Centre from 2003-2008 and taught in the Department of Italian from 2005-2010 including providing Italian language classes for Historians and Art Historians at the Warwick in Venice facility, the Palazzo Pesaro Papafava, in 2007.

In July 2010 she came into post as the new Pathways to Law Coordinator for the Midlands. Pathways to Law is an innovative widening participation project funded by the Sutton Trust and The College of Law. The programme targets Year 12 students who have a keen interest in law, attend a state school in the Midlands and who have little or no family history of going to university. The programme lasts for two years and students can expect to attend roughly six events designed to provide them with the advice, skills and experience they need to succeed in the study and practice of Law.
