Guy Medal awarded to Professor Gareth Roberts
At the Royal Statistical Society's annual conference on 3 September, Professor Gareth Roberts was awarded the Guy Medal in Silver for 2008 (to add to the Guy Medal in Bronze that he won in 1997).
The Guy Medal in Silver recognises work of special merit that has been read at an Ordinary Meeting of the Royal Statistical Society and/or published in the Society's journals. The award to Professor Roberts was made for his contributions to the theory, methodology and applications of Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithms, and especially for three papers read to the Society and published with discussion in J. Roy. Stat. Soc. B: "Bayesian computation via the Gibbs sampler and related Markov chain Monte Carlo methods" (1993), "Efficient construction of reversible jump MCMC proposal distributions" (2003) and "Exact and computationally efficient likelihood-based estimation for discretely observed diffusion processes" (2006).
On receiving the medal from the President of the Royal Statistical Society, Professor Roberts thanked many who had influenced and contributed substantially to his work, particularly Jeff Rosenthal and Omiros Papasiliopoulos, and paid tribute to the support given to him in his career by his parents and his wife Deborah.
