Warwick Farewell - Professor Julian Gardner

Professor Julian GardnerJulian Gardner, Founding Professor in the Department of History of Art, retired at the end of September. Professor Gardner was central to the establishment of the History of Art Department in 1974 and held a number of important roles during his time at Warwick. He was twice a Pro-Vice Chancellor, served on many of the University’s most important committees and most recently was the Director of the Centre for the Study of the Renaissance.

During his career Professor Gardner has been a Research Professor of the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft at the Bibliotheca Hertziana in Rome, Distinguished Visiting Professor in Mediaeval Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, and a Fellow of the Center for the Advanced Study of the Visual Arts at the National Gallery of Art in Washington. He publishes widely in international scholarly journals and his books include The Tomb and the Tiara, (1992) and Patrons, Painters and Saints (1994).
