John Leighfield Receives Mountbatten Medal

Mr John LeighfieldJohn Leighfield, the University's Pro-Chancellor and Chair of the University's Council, has been awarded this year's Mountbatten Medal by the Institute of Engineering and Technology in recognition of an outstanding contribution to the promotion of electronics or information technology and their application.

The Medal was established by the National Electronics Council in 1992 and named after The Earl Mountbatten of Burma, the first Chairman of the Council and previous recipents include Tim Berners-Lee.

John is Chairman of RM plc (the leading provider of IT services to education) and a Director of a number of other IT-related companies.

He has in the past been a member of the Board of UKERNA who provide JANET, the UK national academic network, and Chairman of the Birmingham Teaching Company Scheme Centre. He was President of the Computing Services and Software Association from 1995 to 1996 and of the British Computer Society from 1994 to 1995 and is President of the Institute for the Management of Information Systems. He is a Liveryman and a member of the Court of the Worshipful Company of Information Technologists.

John Leighfield served on the University Council as a lay member from 1990-1996 and 1997-2000 and now serves as an ex-officio member in his capacity as Pro-Chancellor. In addition to chairing the University Council he serves as an ex officio member of the Finance and General Purposes, Strategy, Honorary Degrees and Nominations Committees.
