Mairi Macintyre takes part in Godiva Awakes journey

GodivaMairi Macintyre, Principal Teaching Fellow in WMG, has reached the end of a seven day journey lending her pedal power to help Lady Godiva reach London, to celebrate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The giant puppet and 'cyclopedia', powered by 25 cyclists at a time, travelled 125 miles from the Godiva Awakes ceremony in Coventry on 28 July, arriving in Walthamstow on 5 August 2012. The puppet represented the arts from the West Midlands region as part of the cultural Olympiad.

Mairi said:

I heard about Godiva Awakes two years ago and just loved the intent of the project. It has a real feeling of British eccentricity and it has been great to be part of it. Each town and village we passed through greeted us with such warmth. The expression on the children’s faces when they saw Lady Godiva move was priceless.

The Cyclopedia machine, which carried Godiva, will be on display at Coventry Transport Museum from 6 August 2012.
