The Trustees of the Lord Rootes Memorial Fund (LRMF) held a reception in Senate House on 6 March to congratulate the 2001-02 LRMF award recipients on the successful completion of their projects. The LRMF provides the opportunity for individual or groups of students to plan, execute and complete a report on a project of their own initiation, which is unrelated to their course of study and contributes to their overall experience of learning and higher education. Successful project reports included:

Emily Walch and Graham Hook: Xiang Gang or "Fragrant Harbour": An Insight into Political, Economic and Social Change in Hong Kong since 1997

Claire Leonard: Study into the Rights of Asylum-Seekers and Aboriginal People as ‘Outsiders’ in the Australian Legal System

Katherine Cundliffe: Search for State Flowers in the Rocky Mountains of the USA in 2002

Simon Creasey, John Ennew, Sam Green and Mika Griffiths:
An Assessment of European Rail Services

Judith Anzures Cabrera, Nicolas Espejo Yaksic and Diane Gabrysiak: Trans-Mongolian Rail: A Journey Through Images

Ross Davidson: The Irish Coast to Coast Walk

Kate Thomas: Photographic Study of Italian Architecture

Richard Watts and Jonathan Heron: Fail Better Productions’ "Crave" at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe

Charles Conrath: The Greek Turkish Relationship in the 20th Century

The Trustees also met to decide the allocation of awards to 2002-03 applicants. Awards ranged from £550 for a photographic study of the University, to a special £5,000 grant for a project of outstanding merit, to take a production of the play "Closer" to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
