Warwick Professor Awarded Knighthood in Queen's Birthday Honours List

We take great pleasure in congratulating Professor Kumar Bhattacharyya CBE, Professor of Manufacturing and Head of the Warwick Manufacturing Group, following the announcement that he has been awarded a Knighthood in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.
A distinguished academic and innovator, Professor Bhattacharyya was appointed as the UK’s first Professor of Manufacturing in 1980 when he became founder and Director of the now internationally renowned Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG), at the University of Warwick.
Since its beginning WMG has recognised and exploited technology to successfully drive forward modern industry and develop a strong working partnership between the University and industry. Recently, in April this year WMG established a £70 million "International Automotive Research Centre", which is set to secure around 50,000 jobs in automotive engineering in the Midlands and beyond.
WMG is Europe’s leading graduate centre for manufacturing research, development and business management. It has a prominent client list on the teaching programmes that include Acordis, Astra-Zeneca, Bombardier, British Aerospace, British Airways, British Steel, David Brown, Ford, IBC Vehicles, IMI Norgren, Jaguar, London Electricity, Lucas Varity, Rolls-Royce, Rover Group, Tetra Pak, and VSEL.
A pioneer of collaborative research, Professor Bhattacharyya has helped WMG secure partnerships with over 100 companies in the USA, Europe and Asia-Pacific, as well as joint ventures with many esteemed overseas universities. These include the Technical University of Berlin, IWF, and Fraunhofer IGD (Germany), the University of Trento (Italy), and the Institute of Design at the Illinois Institute of Technology (USA).
As a member of the UK Council for Science and Technology, Professor Bhattacharyya has advised the Government on major science and technology issues of strategic importance to Britain.
Professor Bhattacharyya, has published extensively in the field of manufacturing and has rendered a great service as an advisor to many companies and organisations in the UK. He is a board member of Advantage West Midlands, the Regional Development Agency, a member of the DTI Committee for Investment and Competitiveness and a member of the Export Committee on Education and Training. He has also made major contributions to manufacturing internationally as an adviser to Governments in various countries on industrial policy and strategy, and is a member of the Business and Technology Advisory Committee in Kuala Lumpur.
Professor Bhattacharyya is the recipient of a number of prestigious awards, and he received the CBE in 1997 for services to industry and technology. Warwick is proud of his significant contribution to manufacturing in Britain and internationally, and that he is to receive this honour of Knighthood.
