Dr Lincoln Allison Awarded Higher Doctorate

Originally published 15 July 2003

Lincoln Allison, a reader in the Department of Politics and International Studies, was awarded a DLitt last week for his work on the politics of sport. His was the only Higher Doctorate awarded by the University this academic year.

Mr Allison, MA Oxf, DLitt Warw, has been at the University for almost all of his working life and alongside his teaching and research has published many articles and books.

Dr Allison is among the last of the generation that didn’t need a PhD; he started his career, aged 21, teaching Politics at University College, Oxford. He took up the position of lecturer at Warwick when he was 22 and published his first book during his mid-twenties despite a delay in publication caused by the three-day week.

The decision to submit his large body of work for a Higher Doctorate was prompted by peoples’ automatic assumption that he had a doctorate.

He describes his work as “an intellectual hobby that turned into a job”, his work on the politics of sport is pioneering and he is sought after for his expert opinion on the subject.

Dr Allison is retiring from the University next year and is pleased to be leaving on a high-note, he now has a graduation photo for his mother as he never had one taken the first time round!

I am sure that you will all join us in congratulating Dr Allison on his achievement.
