A Warwick student has scooped a top Chemistry award for his demonstrative potential to lead the chemistry industry into the future with outstanding intellectual ability.

Martin Beckett, a 4th year Chemistry student, has won the Salters’ Graduate Prize and £1000 following a series of tough interviews with experts in the industry.

Martin is in his final year of a Masters in Chemistry, and is looking at ways to help reduce environmental toxins and toxin concentrations in foods.

Upon hearing about his success, he said:

"I am delighted to win the award. I spend a year in the chemistry industry as part of my degree, which will have given me the edge. Studying at Warwick has been an extremely stimulating and enjoyable experience. The labs are fitted with cutting-edge equipment, and the staff are tremendously open and helpful. There is also a great deal of supporting equipment that is at the leading edge in its field".

Following this achievement and confident after a year with Glaxo Smith Kleine, major pharmaceutical companies are already trying to entice Martin into a career. He gives credit to the independence and transferable skills he gained from the year out, and regards Warwick as one of the best Chemistry degrees in the country. The award ceremony and cash prize will not happen until December, but plans for a new car are on the horizon.
