Originally published 22 July 2004

The University formally records its gratitude to Peter Dodd who is retiring from the position of University Treasurer on 31 July 2004 after six years in the post.

At the last meeting of Council on 2 July 2004 the Chair of University Council, John Leighfield, drew particular attention to the contribution which Peter has made to the work of the Council and the University as a whole. Following a 40-year career with Barclays Bank Peter held the post of University Treasurer for six years and prior to that was a Lay Member of Council for six years.

Peter has been a longstanding and highly valued member of the University and we hope that he will continue to play a role in the work of the University in the future.

At the same Council meeting, Chris Foy was appointed to the post of University Treasurer for an initial term of four years. Chris has served as a lay member of the University Council since 2001 and served as Chair of the University’s Building Committee for 2002. In the last year Chris was also a member of the Strategy, Finance and General Purposes and Nominations Committees and the Arts Centre Board.

As University Treasurer Chris will Chair the Finance and General Purposes Committee and will continue to serve on the Strategy and Nominations Committees.

About Council

The Council is the executive governing body of the University with particular managerial responsibilities for finance and the University estate, and also a more general remit to oversee the conduct of University business in concert with the Senate. The Council, which meets up to five times each year, is chaired by the Pro-Chancellor, Mr John Leighfield, and has a full membership of 33, a majority of whom are lay members drawn from the professions, business and industry and local authorities, who bring a range of experience and professional expertise to the work of the University.

In order to carry out its responsibilities, and ensure the necessary dialogue with the Senate, the Council has specialist standing committees, principal amongst which are the Finance and General Purposes Committee and the Building Committee. The detailed work of the Council is mostly carried out through these standing committees, the Strategy Committee and a range of Council sub-committees, usually with a mixture of lay and academic membership, which have an important role in overseeing the conduct of specific areas of business, e.g. Audit Committee and the Building Committee.
