Steve Dixon & Rachel Edwards Win John Grimwade Medal

Dr Rachel Edwards and Dr Steve DixonDr Steve Dixon, Senior Lecturer in Physics and Head of the Ultrasonics Research Group, and Dr Rachel Edwards a Researcher in the Ultrasonics Group, have been awarded the John Grimwade Medal by the British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing.

They won the Medal in partnership with their co-authors Dr Ali Sophian and Professor Gui Yan Tian, from the University of Huddersfield, for their paper (published in Insight Vol 47 No 6, June 2005):

Dual-probe methods using pulses eddy currents and electromagnetcic acoustic transducers for NDT inspection.

The 2005 medal is also shared with Dr David Topp and Dr Michael Smith for their paper (published in Insight Vol 47 No 6, June 2005):

Application of the ACFM inspection method to rail and rail vehicles.

Dixon and Edwards' paper describes a new NDT system that utilises two diffetrent non-contact techniques: EMATS and pulsed eddy current (PEC) sensors in a complimentary way.

Both methods lend themselves to automated on-line inspection of materials during the manufacturing process and in service.
