Philosophy & Literature Essay Competition - 2009 Winners Announced

The Departments of Philosophy and English & Comparative Literary Studies recently announced the winners of the 2009 Philosophy & Literature Essay Competition.

The submitted essays for 2009 addressed the following question:

How does studying philosophy and literature matter to your life?

The competition was conceived and initiated by Andrew Charman, a Warwick Philosophy & Literature graduate. The annual prize is supported by Andrew’s generous donation.

The competition is open to current students and recent graduates and received a very positive response in the number of essays submitted. The essays were judged by a panel of readers who were looking for a clear expression of personal commitment to and engagement with philosophy and literature. Andrew Charman commented: “I loved these essays and was delighted at the standards and motivations they displayed.”

Congratulations go to the prize winners who were:
1st Prize (£500): Peter Faulconbridge
2nd Prize (£200): Sean Hudson
3rd Prize (£100): James Mackay

A fourth highly commended essay by Eliza Ives was also chosen by the panel to receive acknowledgement and a prize of £25 in book tokens.

The winning essay from Peter Faulconbridge paid homage to Socrates, and was described by the judges as “original, brilliant, entertaining, subtle”. Peter’s essay was written in the form of a dialogue, in imitation of Plato.

The winners received their prizes at a reception on Wednesday 10 June attended by members of the judging panel and the departments.
