Sir Richard O'Brien DLitt

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Sir Richard O'Brien, honorary graduate of the University and former chairman of the Manpower Services Commission (MSC).

The goal of the MSC was to provide training and work opportunities for people who had been in trouble with the law. Through Sir Richard's work, many ex-offenders found their way back into society, refurbishing community buildings, clearing gardens for the elderly and preserving historical buildings such as the signal box at Crewe.

Sir Richard died aged 89 on 11 December 2009. He is survived by his wife, his two sons and his three daughters.

There will be a memorial service for Sir Richard at 12 noon on Saturday 27 February at St Martin in the Fields Church. Members of the University who met Sir Richard through his engagement with Warwick are welcome to attend.
