My Warwick Life: Dr Tim Lockley

Tim LockleyThe My Warwick Life feature gives an insight into staff and students’ lives at Warwick, considering both their work and social life on campus.

Here we hear from Dr Tim Lockey, Associate Professor (Reader), History, and Director of the School of Comparative American Studies.

There’s no such thing as a typical day, but, in a nutshell, my job involves…

teaching and supervising students, routine administration and conducting historical research. This year I’m on leave so I’ve been concentrating on the research side, writing articles for publication, and starting research on some new projects.

I had a really useful meeting recently with…

Tom Lekan and Carol Harrison from the University of South Carolina to discuss our ongoing undergraduate exchange programme. We have run this exchange since 1968, and it remains the model of how these things should be done.

I recently attended a course on…

‘Black Savannah’ in the historic city of Savannah, Georgia. I was one of a number of academics presenting research on black life in the city in slavery and freedom during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. What was particularly great about this conference was the large number of local residents who came to learn about the history of their community.

I'm really enjoying working on…

an article about black mortality. I get to learn about some really horrible diseases and how they affected the society of Savannah in the 1850s.

The best thing about working at Warwick is…

the students – usually! They are normally bright, well motivated and fun to teach.

I recently watched…

Omid Djalili at the Arts Centre and had a great night out with friends and family.

I'm an occasional user of the Sports Centre for…

tennis – there are four of us in the history department who play men’s doubles about once per month.
