First published in CommUnicate issue 318

The University regrets to announce the death of Professor Susan Hurley, who held a chair in Warwick’s Department of Politics and International Studies between 1994-2006.

Professor Hurley’s professional career began with a series of major contributions to legal and political philosophy, culminating in the acclaimed book Natural Reasons: Personality and Polity (1992).

She achieved international prominence in two fields – legal philosophy and the philosophy of psychology – and undertook pioneering work to bring these separate fields into constructive contact. She was the first female Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford and was appointed Professor of Philosophy at the University of Bristol in 2006.

Professor Hurley is survived by her husband, Prof. Nicholas Rawlins and their two sons.
