Warwick People - Mary Coates

Mary Coates, a third year PhD student in Professor Jim Beynon’s group at Warwick HRI, has won the British Society for Plant Pathology (BSPP) P H Gregory Award. Mary won the award for her presentation entitled “Searching for avirulence genes in Hyaloperonospora parasitica” at the 8th Conference of the European Foundation for Plant Pathology/BSPP Presidential meeting in Denmark last August.

The P H Gregory competition is open to PhD students and young scientists who have not previously presented a paper to a meeting of a learned society. Mary faced stiff competition from high quality talks by nine other contributors, two of whom, Ana Costa and Eliana Maffettone, were also from Warwick HRI. The prize of £250 and commemorative certificate was presented by current BSPP President, Warwick HRI’s Professor Peter Mills – he was not allowed to vote for the Warwick students!
