Student Experience

Award collected and profile completed by Selina Welter, Warwick Sport

Tell us a bit about your role...

I’m part of a small marketing team of three and manage all the Warwick Sport campaigns, from termly events to big campaigns such as Team Warwick and Warwick Girls Can. I support all the services, from active team to physio.

Tell us about the award-winning project/work and your involvement in it…

Team Warwick is a project that has developed over the years to what it is now - a community for sports clubs to showcase their work to each other, to be seen by the Vice Chancellor and to hear words of encouragement and support throughout the year.

#teamwarwick is a way for us to celebrate and support each of our 65 sports clubs. By representing us competitively in BUCS, Varsity and other competitive events, they make a huge contribution to the life and reputation of our University and help us build a strong community. It is an invaluable part of the student experience. It wouldn’t have existed without certain people’s interest and care. When I took the project on I was able to include my own creativity into and really take ownership, taking it to a new level. This was really rewarding and fulfilling.

My role is to manage and coordinate every part of the project, from the design and concept development to the delivery, as well as ensuring the brand and tone of voice is consistent and continusly seen across campus. We are now using #teamwarwick to attract elite sporting student to the university. The project’s success relies on a community of over 5,000 members taking the project on board, as well as a tight-knit team of Warwick Sport and Student Union as well as central Marketing pushing the #teamwarwick message forwards.

How does it feel to have won the Student Experience award?

It’s great to be honoured and recognised for the work you do. Knowing that our project has such an impact on the student community is very gratifying and exciting, allowing us to take the project further.

Why do you think people should get involved with nominating for the University Awards?

It’s a great way to show your department and team that the work you do is valuable.

What was a personal highlight for you from the Awards evening on 18 May?

I really enjoyed seeing and meeting the other winners. Many of my colleagues across the University were being honoured for work they do.

The University Awards are a great way for the University to improve and learn from staff initiatives over the year. If you could change one thing at the University, what would it be?

Less bureaucracy - our project works because we have a good amount of creativity and management control over it and not too many cooks.

What would you like to say to the person – or people – who nominated you?

Thank you for thinking this work is so valuable that the entire University community needs to know about it.
