Severe weather: University guidance and provision

Here is an overview of what the University will do in the event of severe weather affecting campus or the local area.

We have a severe weather policy which informs provision for staff and students in the event of severe weather.

Staff and students should always check local travel and weather reports to inform their own decisions on getting to or leaving the University campus. Whilst members of the University are expected to make every reasonable effort to attend work or studies on campus, health, safety and wellbeing considerations are paramount, and people should not take unnecessary risks.

If weather conditions are such that we invoke our severe weather policy, we will notify staff and students via our news channels insiteLink opens in a new window and MyWarwickLink opens in a new window.

The Internal Communications team will also write directly to Heads of Department by email for them to disseminate the message to their teams via locally agreed channels such as email or phone calls. Managers of non-pc-based staff are expected to notify to their teams through other routes as agreed locally. Heads of Department / line managers are asked to consider alternative working arrangements for their teams in line with the severe weather policy, using their discretion based on individual needs and the critical business requirements of the department.

Academic departments are expected to notify students of changes to teaching arrangements through local dissemination routes – such as departmental websites, email, the MyWarwick app or phone calls.

Departments hosting visitors will be expected to liaise with them directly on whether events/meetings will progress as planned.

If you feel you are unable to travel safely to or from campus, or that you should leave work/studies early due to weather conditions, please liaise with your Head of Department / line manager (staff) or department (students).

Staff and students are expected to resume normal working/course arrangements the following working day unless notified via the channels outlined above that severe weather conditions remain in place.
