Beyond the Lyric

Wednesday 27th February, 6 - 8pm, CAPITAL Centre Studio, Millburn House

The CAPITAL Masterclass - Beyond the Lyric

An evening of poetry and music with Fiona Sampson and the Coull Quartet

Come and hear the first two movements of Schubert’s great C major String Quintet performed by Warwick’s quartet-in-residence, the Coull Quartet, playing with Lucy Hall (2nd year English) and Sophie McKechnie (2nd year History), alongside work-in-progress by poet Fiona Sampson.

What do poetry and music have in common?  What is the musical element in poetry? Usually, when words and music come together they do so in song.  But supposing that, instead of setting words to music, we set music to words? What would that sound like?

Our exploration takes on one of the great lyric moments in chamber music – composed by the master of lieder and song-cycle.

Fiona Sampson is an award-winning poet and translator and the editor of Poetry Review. Her recent collection Common Prayer was short-listed for this year’s T. S. Eliot prize. She is a Fellow of Creativity at the CAPITAL Centre. The Coull Quartet have been Warwick’s string quartet-in-residence since 1977, and regularly perform concerts around the world.

Tickets are free but limited, and are available in advance from the CAPITAL Centre office between 9am and 5pm. For further details, please call 024 761 50377 or e-mail Peter.Kirwan@warwick.ac.uk
