Make Trade Fair Week

Make Trade Fair Week takes place on campus next week, 25-29 February, exploring and debating the world trade system and the global trade justice movement.

The event is organised by students and is held as part of Fairtrade’s annual ‘Fairtrade Fortnight’. It aims to promote the importance of a trading system that benefits the economy of developing countries

The event is about raising awareness raising and taking direct action in a campaign to ‘Make Trade Fair’. Events are held nationwide and include lobbying MPs in Westminster to local demonstrations, debates and discussions.

The week of activities encourages staff and students to think about the global trading system in new ways by questioning where products come from. The organisers of Make Trade Fair week ask “Do you ever pick up a t-shirt, a box of chocolates or a bouquet of flowers and wonder just how it got here?” Make Trade Fair week aims to reveal some of these answers in a series of events.

Events include:

  • A lively discussion on Fairtrade with a panel of top speakers including representatives from Oxfam, New Internationalist magazine and a Fairtrade organization based in the Windward Isles.
  • A workshop provided by the Activists’ Legal Project on legal rights for activism.
  • The return of the Yurt on the Piazza – a huge mongolian tent where you can browse fairly traded goods, make your own fair trade jewellery and swap what you don't need for something else at the swap shop whilst listening to acoustic bands and DJ’s.
