BSHM - British Society for the History of Mathematics

This is a one-day workshop investigating the rich variety of uses of the Web and other technologies in education. Its objectives are to promote awareness of what is available via the Web for using history in the learning and teaching of mathematics, and to spread good practice in its use; to evaluate the current and potential uses of the Web (and other technologies) for history in mathematics education from the perspectives of teachers, students, historians and website developers; and to discuss the most fruitful ways forward for us to respond to the opportunities, as well as the problems and pitfalls, that the Web affords. We shall explicitly address issues at primary, secondary and tertiary levels of education.

There will be talks, demonstrations and discussion. Speakers include Jenni Back of the NRICH project, Piers Bursill-Hall of the University of Cambridge, Claire Ellis of Simon Singh's Enigma Project, Edmund Robertson of the MacTutor History of Mathematics Archive at St Andrews University, and David Wilkins of Trinity College, Dublin.

This promises to be a fascinating meeting. We shall consider the worries as well as the wonders arising from the extraordinary spread of the Web. We shall compare a real Enigma cipher machine with a digital simulation, hear from representatives of leading websites in the history of mathematics, and discuss the difficult problems and the huge benefits of the Web as a resource for teaching mathematics and its history at all levels.
