Looking for Alfred: Johan Grimonprez

Looking for Alfred by Johan GrimonprezOn Monday 14 February until Tuesday 8 March 2005, the Mead Gallery will be showing a new film by the celebrated Belgian artist, Johan Grimonprez. Titled Looking for Alfred, the work will be part homage to the master director, Alfred Hitchcock, mimicking his distinctive cinematic language and exploring his legacy within modern day culture.

As well as being highly regarded as the master of the thriller genre, Hitchcock was also famous for appearing in his own movies in cameo parts. His first cameo part was sitting at a desk in a newsroom and later in the crowd watching an arrest in his film THE LODGER (1926).

Part homage to Hitchcock, part investigation of look-alike culture, Looking for Alfred is a witty and multi-levelled deconstruction of notions of reality. The film is counter-pointed with behind-the-scenes footage of the production, including screen tests for the perfect ‘doppelganger’ which were held in New York, Los Angeles and London. This quest culminates with the filming of a gathering of several Hitchcock impersonators in Brussels, Belgium.

Johan Grimonprez was born in 1962 in Roeselaer, Belgium and lives and works in Brussels and New York. He has also had solo exhibitions at Centre Pompidou, Paris and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston; and his work has been featured in a number of international group exhibitions including: the touring group show Trauma (2002) that was exhibited at MOMA Oxford, amongst other venues, and in The Galleries Show (2002) at The Royal Academy of Arts, London.

Join us for lunch time drinks to celebrate the opening and meet the artist on Monday 14th February 12pm-2pm. Everyone welcome.

The Gallery is open from Monday to Saturday, noon until 9pm. Entry is free.
