What is the Cultural Value of Celebrity?

Humanities Research Centre Interdisciplinary Seminar

A Cultural History of Celebrity - What is the cultural value of celebrity?

This seminar will consider the notion of celebrity in its many manifestations from the eighteenth century to the present day.

Figures as diverse as Nelson, Flaubert and Sarah Jessica Parker are under discussion in a series that aims to give a historical framework to this much-discussed phenomenon, and consider how far the notion of celebrity has displaced ideas of heroism, fame and genius in intellectual and cultural life.
