One World Week Forum Event: A Europe in Crisis? Turkey, Enlargement and Beyond

After the failure of politicians to win populations over with the European Constitution, gaping holes have been spreading between the yellow stars on the blue EU flag. One of the biggest sources of dissatisfaction amongst populations has been the possible integration of Turkey. Polls indicate rife opinions that Turkey is too big, too poor, and too Muslim to integrate with 'real' European countries. However, its admittance could broaden the single market, encourage geopolitical stability, and prove to the world that Islamophobia has no place in Europe. What does the future of EU enlargement hold? Should the EU be prudently exclusive or unselfishly welcoming?

  • Council of Europe, Strasbourg, France
  • Mr. Fadi Hakura, Specialist on Turkish Affairs, Chatham House
