One World Week 2007
One World Week (OWW) takes place at the University of Warwick in England from the 19th to 27th January 2007. It is organised by a team of over 240 student volunteers and is recognised as the World’s Largest Student-run International Event with over 22,000 participants from 120 countries.
One World Week celebrates the world’s mosaic of culture through its four elements: Forum, Festival, Sports and Arts.
One World Forum, the intellectual element of OWW hosts conferences on a variety of current international affairs coinciding with this year’s theme, Progress: Our Shared Responsibility. Confirmed speakers at this year’s event include Professor John Hume (Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, 1998), Senator Mushahid Hussain (Secretary General, Pakistan Muslim League), Hon Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan (Law, Justice and Interior Minister of Pakistan), Mr Sachin Pilot (MP, India), Mr Martin Bell (Ambassador of BBC International and UNICEF UK) and Mrs Wijdan Salim (Acting Minister for Human Rights, Iraq). One World Forum also consists of a Film Festival screening Oscar-nominated films.
One World Festival consists of five days, each exhibiting a different region of our world: Australasia, Americas and Caribbean, Europe, Middle East and Africa, and UK. Highlights include the Eurovision Song Contest and Miss One World. Also in the Students’ Union, are the Night events, which portray festivities from around the world. Highlights include the International Food Festival, the Fashion Show, the World Party, and SensAsian featuring none other than international superstars Rishi Rich and Juggy D.
Put together in an Olympics-style format, One World Sports consists of a wide variety of competitions and workshops including football, water-polo, cricket, and a highly anticipated Pro-evolution football computer game tournament. Capoeira, a unique fusion of music and martial arts, will teach students how to practice martial arts to the sound of music.
One World Arts, the creative element of OWW, is set to showcase its largest ever portfolio of exhibition, creativity, music and drama. The most awaited events are the annual World Music Concert, which will include a performance by Nestor Torres (Grammy Award-winning flautist), a Graffiti Exhibition and theatre performances including Whodidit? by Neil Harrison and The Island, set in South Africa’s Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was held hostage.
