Warwick Amnesty: Protect the Human Week 2010
Amnesty International's annual Protect the Human Week will take place from Monday 8 February to Friday 12 February. The week will feature 5 key Amnesty campaigns including the abolition of the death penalty, human rights related to terrorism and security, the rights of refugees and asylum seekers and Demand Dignity, a new campaign focussing on the basic human rights associated with poverty and deprivation.
The week will bring a wealth of events including film screenings, ethical debates, photo exhibitions and hands on campaigning. There will be talks from some inspirational speakers – already confirmed are Sunny Jacobs and Peter Pringle who served 20 and 15 years on death row for crimes they did not commit and are now internationally renowned speakers and campaigners.
Liz Peretz, from the Asylum and Immigration Tribunals project, and Bill MacKeith, the chairman of Barbed Wire Britain will also appear.
Sleep-Out on the Piazza: Friday 12 February
The final event of Warwick Amnesty's Protect the Human Week will be a sponsored sleep-out on the Piazza on Friday 12 February.
The event has been organised in association with Project Ayuda and Warwick Star to highlight the destitution of refused asylum seekers as part of Amnesty International's 'Still Human Still Here' campaign, and the plight of people all round the world living without their basic human rights such as housing, clean water and sanitation as part of Amnesty's 'Demand Dignity' Campaign.
The event will start around 7 o'clock in the evening and will feature information and petition stalls at the beginning of the night. There will also be free refreshments for all participants. Everyone is welcome to attend.
