Warwick International Development Summit 2010

widsWarwick International Development Summit (WIDS) will take place on campus from Friday 19 – Sunday 21 November. The overarching theme for this year’s Summit will be “Resources, Crisis and Conflict - facing up to the new decade” and aims to explore some of the challenges our globe faces as we enter a new decade.

Warwick International Development Summit is organised by the International Development Society, a student society at the University of Warwick that aims to engage students with global development and provide a platform to enable them to become actively involved.

The summit will bring together stakeholders from different sectors in development - from governments, civil society organisations, academia, international institutions and the private sector in both developed and developing countries - to reconcile policy, practice and theory through critical engagement and constructive debate.

There will be a range of exciting and motivational speakers from UNICEF, DFID, the UN, as well as academics:

  • Katherine Nightingale, Senior Research & Policy Officer - Building Disaster Resilient Communities, Christian Aid
  • Dr. John Hancock, Councellor - Economic Research and Statistics Division, World Trade Organization
  • Valerie Msoka - UN Mission to Sudan
  • Julia Bucknall, Manager - Water Anchor, World Bank
  • Dr Anke Hoeffler, Research Officer - Centre for the Study of African Economies, University of Oxford

The subtle interplay between the factors in our theme will challenge our speakers and panellists to come up with solutions and areas for future improvement. Themes this year will include:

  • Post conflict redevelopment, special focus - women and children
  • Resource management, special focus - corporate social responsibility (CSR)

For the full list of events see the WIDS 2010 timetable.

The Summit will be held in the Maths & Stats building of the University of Warwick.

After the summit, a magazine is published covering the main issues raised in further detail. This will be available to download from the WIDS website.
