Alabama result "reflects Trump’s tenuous political base"

Commenting on the Democrat Doug Jones winning the Alabama Senate race, Dr Ben Margulies of the University of Warwick’s Department of Politics and International Studies said:

“This is partly about an unusually unpopular, divisive and suspect Republican candidate, Roy Moore, but it also reflects Trump’s tenuous political base. His core vote isn’t that large and his success partly relies on voter loyalty to the Republican party, and that may have limits amongst educated voters.

“The result may also presage strong Democratic gains in the 2019 midterm elections”.
