Could Kansas save Obama from becoming lame duck president?

Dr Alexander Smith is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Warwick and conducts field research on grassroots Republican politics in Kansas.

“Most pundits are predicting that the Republicans will take back control of the US Senate in the Midterm elections being held today. If this happens, it would be a significant setback for President Obama, who could face a hostile Republican majority in the upper house throughout the remainder of his time at the White House.

“However, there are some unpredictable races this year, which could dramatically re-shape the outcome of the election. In Kansas, where there is no Democratic Party candidate on the ballot paper, the Independent Greg Orman has appealed to both Democrats and moderate Republicans to mount a strong challenge to Republican incumbent Pat Roberts. Recent polls have suggested Orman leads Roberts; if he is victorious, it will be a major upset in one of the Republican Party's historic strongholds.”
