Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzman’s escape from a Mexican high security prison - Dr Benjamin Smith

Dr Benjamin Smith, from the University of Warwick’s History department is Associate Professor of Latin American History. He comments,

"Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzman’s escape from a Mexican high security prison presents both US and Mexican authorities with real challenges. US authorities, who had pressed for the extradition of the kingpin, will have to ponder whether the Mexican judicial system can be trusted. Mexican authorities will have to examine how the Sinaloa Federation leader’s escape will affect the ongoing fragmentation of Mexico drug trafficking organizations. In particular, how will Chapo’s freedom affect the rise of the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion, which has gradually moved in on territory previously held by the Sinaloa group?"
