Low-risk pregnant women urged to avoid hospital births

Professor of Obstetrics, Siobhan Quenby shares her views on the new NHS guidelines released today for expectant mothers.

"It is great that the media have given publicity to the issue of place of birth for pregnant women. This publicity will give women and their partners more information to make appropriate choices about place of their birth.

"Indeed midwifery care is extremely important to the safe delivery of mother and her baby. Midwife-led units are undoubtedly a good option for low risk women. However, it is important to realise that about 40% of women who start their first labour in a midwife led unit or at home have to be transferred to an obstetrics unit because of complications in labour. This figure drops to 10% in women in their second or subsequent labour."
