Mexican election - expert comment

Dr Tom Long, Assistant Professor in the Department of Politics & International Studies at the University of Warwick, comments on Andrés Manuel López Obrador's victory in the Mexican elections which took place over the weekend.

He says: "Despite the unified criticisms from Mexico's traditional parties, leftist candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador cruised to victory in yesterday's elections. After a campaign marked by polarized rhetoric -- and by troubling violence against politicians, especially at the local level -- the election day went smoothly. All opposition candidates and parties recognized AMLO's victory, setting the stage for a smooth transition.

"While the next president will be beset by challenges -- violence, economic under performance, and President Trump -- the election also signals a remarkable achievement for a country that only saw its first fully democratic modern election 18 years ago."
