Prof Stephen Hawking's legacy - Expert comment from Dr Gavin Morley

Gavin MorleyDr Gavin Morley, Royal Society University Research Fellow and an Associate Professor in the Warwick Physics Department comments on the legacy of Professor Stephen Hawking:

"Einstein tried unsuccessfully to explain how gravity and quantum physics work together and this has been the most important problem in physics ever since. Stephen Hawking’s legacy is that he made progress in this area. One thing he worked on was black holes: gravity is always important here because of their enormous mass. He showed that quantum physics plays a role also, in that black holes should give off ‘Hawking radiation’, allowing them to evaporate. I am building an experiment in Warwick which may one day be able to test if gravity is quantum, because for me this remains the most exciting area of physics."
