Tax rises needed to fund the NHS

The Institute for Fiscal Studies and Health Foundation said the NHS would need an extra 4% a year - or £2,000 per UK household - for the next 15 years. Dr Sam Watson, Senior Research Fellow, Warwick Medical School comments.

“It is widely agreed that healthcare spending needs to increase to meet increasing demand and maintain service levels. Recent cuts to other government spending mean there is little room to find funding from other places in the budget, meaning tax rises may be the only way. However, tax burden in the UK is much below the OECD average, so tax rises may be politically feasible.”
