What can economic history teach us about the BRICS?

Protests have broken out across Brazil against rising public transport costs and the expense of staging the 2014 World Cup. Brazil is one of the BRICS countries, a group of countries also ncluding Russia, India, China and South Africa, seen as the five major emerging national economies.

Professor Stephen Broadberry, economist at the University of Warwick's Centre for Competitive Advantage in the Global Economy (CAGE), examines what economic history can tell us about the real growth prospects for the BRICS. He has contributed a chapter to the new CAGE policy report 'Reversals of Fortune'.
