Institute of Advanced Study to double postdoctoral fellowship numbers

  • IAS Post Doc study€2 million award from the Marie Sklodowska-Curie COFUND scheme
  • Warwick Interdisciplinary Research Leadership Programme (WIRL) is a major new initiative to train future generations of Research Leaders in Europe
  • WIRL will train 30 international researchers over five years

The University of Warwick is to increase support for postdoctoral fellowships following a €2 million award from the Marie Sklodowska-Curie COFUND scheme. Under this scheme the University will match the funding from the EU to offer postdoctoral fellowships to international researchers in areas related to the Warwick Global Research Priorities (GRPs).

Warwick Interdisciplinary Research Leadership Programme (WIRL) is a major new initiative to train future generations of Research Leaders in Europe and will be led by the Institute of Advanced Study (IAS) which has been leading interdisciplinary postdoctoral training since 2007. By linking this experience in postdoctoral training with the innovative cross-sectoral research carried out through GRPs, WIRL will train 30 international researchers over five years to form a group of New Research Leaders who will contribute to the European Union’s plans to build a dynamic, knowledge-based economy and to improve economic growth.

Warwick’s experience shows that Research Leadership is greatly enabled through close mentoring, international collaborations and the opportunity to build an independent research profile within the first five years of post-PhD research. Since 2007 the IAS has hosted a well-established research development programme, delivering complementary skills training to early career researchers. WIRL will be a major step forward in Warwick’s Postdoctoral training programme and will expand the current UK-centred programme into one with a pan-European focus and global reach.

WIRL will create an environment for Fellows to develop their skills and gain the experience required to become Research Leaders in their fields whether in academia or other sectors. This research environment is underpinned by the University’s 11 interdisciplinary GRPs that sit across academic disciplines, representing Warwick’s key areas of research excellence and engagement. GRPs bring together research strengths from across the University, giving them clear thematic identities that show where Warwick can make a significant and distinctive contribution to the resolution of some of the world’s most pressing issues.

Professor Giorgio Riello, Director of the IAS said: “The University of Warwick looks forward to welcoming a number of new researchers who will contribute to the development of key research areas within the University. The IAS is delighted to have received considerable financial support from the Marie Sklodowska-Curie COFUND scheme”.

Recruitment of the first cohort of fellows will take place in early 2017 with the fellows starting their training at Warwick in September 2017.
