Forty-two young physicists from Coventry and Warwickshire had their excellence and passion for physics recognised during a buzzing ceremony at the University of Warwick.

The day gave secondary school students a unique opportunity to understand more about the subject, dispel stereotypes and get first-hand information about the careers offered by a degree in physics.

Teachers selected their best Year 12 ‘School Physicists of the Year’ as part of a nationwide programme led by The Ogden Trust, whose mission is to promote the teaching and learning of physics

They were accompanied on their visit to Warwick’s Department of Physics by their families and teachers.

The guests were able to see interactive demonstrations and hear talks by Professor Steve Dixon on the physics of ultrasound and Dr Gary Barker on taking physics further.

Professor Robin Ball, head of the Department of Physics at the University of Warwick, presented the awards.

He said: "We are delighted to celebrate the achievements of an up-and-coming generation in physics.

“They face exciting opportunities, ranging from unravelling the very nature of matter through the physics of the Higgs Boson, to developing whole new generations of nano-materials and quantum devices, right up to discovering new horizons in astronomy and cosmology."

The Ogden Trust sponsored the event as part of its commitment to ‘making physics matter’.

The Trust also supports a wide range of physics-related programmes to support sixth formers, undergraduates and teachers.

Dr Emilio Jimenez-Roldan, Ogden Trust Teacher Fellow, who organised the event said: “You can’t help but feel very proud when you see so much talent together.

“It is our duty to make sure they are aware of their potential and to support them in achieving it. Individuals and society will benefit enormously if we succeed.”
