Building, coding, hacking… all in a day’s work for Coventry’s future Engineers

Year 10 students at the University of WarwickWith just five months to go until its doors open, the WMG Academy for Young Engineers welcomed some of its first ever cohort of Year 10 Students to a private event last Saturday where they got to build, code and hack computers!

Students from across Coventry, Warwickshire, Solihull and Birmingham gathered at the University of Warwick on Saturday 29 March to take part in a Raspberry Pi event run by RM Education on behalf of the WMG Academy.

The students were introduced to basic programming using raspberry pi computers, hacked cheats into computer games and investigated the hacking & sabotage of web pages.

RM Education, the WMG Academy’s IT Partner was delighted to host the event. Kat Howard from RM said: “What a great day, we really enjoyed working with the WMG Academy’s future students they were so keen to get involved. We’ve all decided we would like to come and study at the WMG Academy too.”

With just over five months left before the WMG Academy opens its doors, the team are busy recruiting staff, preparing the curriculum, finalising plans for specialist equipment and of course, working with employer partners to ensure the business-like, business-led education.

Principal, Mrs Kate Tague said: “It was great to spend some time with some of our Year 10 students, and for them to start to get to know one another whilst working with one of our partners. It’s a busy time for us but it’s exciting to see not just the building, but the teaching team and the student body taking shape – we can’t wait to open in September!”

Ambassadors for the WMG Academy, made up of a range of business partners and employer groups, also met this week to celebrate key milestones achieved on the way to delivering the Academy, and its brand new building for September as well as discussing ongoing plans to open a second WMG Academy for Young Engineers in Solihull in the near future.
