National tennis event heads to University of Warwick

The National Premier Tennis Finals event featuring many of the top men's British doubles players is coming to Coventry this April. Running from 13-17 April, the annual competition is being hosted at the award-winning Indoor tennis facilities at the University of Warwick.

Councillor John Mutton, Leader of Coventry City Council, said: "We are proud as a sporting city to be hosting this year's national event and I'm confident that people playing in the tournament and those who are visiting and spectating will enjoy their time with us here in Coventry.

“The city enjoys a reputation as an event city and hosting this exciting tournament is another example of how we can attract such high profile events. We also hope the event will encourage others to take up the sport and carry on playing tennis at whatever level through their local clubs, schools and facilities in our parks.

“As a host Council for 2012, these are exciting times for Coventry and as an Olympic sport, there is a wider profile and benefits associated with hosting this event. I look forward to attending the matches in April."

The event will feature over 12 teams from across the UK, who have all reached the finals stage following a number of qualifying rounds involving over 60 teams. Running alongside the main professional event will be a regional primary schools competition, organised through Inspire2Coach, and supported by The Warwickshire Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), aimed at encouraging more young people into the sport.

Nigel Thrift, Vice Chancellor, University of Warwick, said: “We are delighted to be hosting this national sporting event at the University of Warwick.

“This is just the latest example of how the University of Warwick’s outstanding facilities have helped attract a range of national and international sporting events to the City of Coventry including tennis, Olympic football, and the International Children’s Games.”

Tickets and information for the event will be available from the Warwick Arts Centre Box Office on 024 76 524 524, through www.warwickartscentre.co.uk, or by calling Mike Dixon, Event Organiser on 07870 778490.

The event is supported by the following partners and organisations – Coventry City Council, The University of Warwick, The Lawn Tennis Association, NHS Coventry, Inspire2Coach, Smith Creative and Premier Inn.

The official charity for the event is Transplant Sport UK, who have enjoyed previous good links and support from Coventry through the city's hosting of the Westfield British Transplant Games in 2009.
