University of Warwick Launches New Flexible Teacher Training Degree

Originally published 10 January 2001

A new flexible teacher training course which can be completed in as little as 10 weeks or as long as 2 years (excluding the school placement elements) has been launched by the Institute of Education at the University of Warwick. From September 2001 the first trainees will begin the flexible courses in the following secondary subjects: Economics and Business Studies, English and Drama, Mathematics, Modern Foreign Languages, Religious Education, and Science. The course:
  • Allows trainees to continue with work or family care while you study
  • Attracts the training salary of £6000
  • Flexible start and completion dates with up to 2 years to complete the course
  • Can be completed in as little as 10 weeks

The new programme will particularly appeal to mature students who would like to the opportunity to train to be a teacher whilst fulfilling work or family commitments. Warwick already attracts a large amount of mature teacher trainees, 40% aged 25 or over.

School placements would take place in one of the 300+ schools that Warwick's Institute of Education has strong partnerships with across the Midlands region, stretching from Wolverhampton in the North West, to Northampton in the South East; from Banbury in the South to Leicester in the North East.

Potential students for the course would need the same qualifications as for a standard PGCE, i.e. GCSE grade C or better in Mathematics and English, and a good honours degree which is at least 50% relevant in content to the subject you wish to teach.

The Local Education Authority normally pay course fees and the students would receive the training salary of £6000 in two payments, £3000 at the start of the course and £3000 at the end. Once you are in employment, shortage subjects also attract a bonus of £4000.

The University's Institute of Education will be mounting a special open day to explain the background to this new development, along with all their other teacher training programmes, on Tuesday 23rd January from 9.30am to 4.00pm. Anyone interested in attending part of that day should contact June Morris on 024 7652 8148.
