Thursday 15th March 2001 will be a double education Minister day for the University of Warwick first Education and Employment Secretary David Blunkett will formally launch the University's new Warwick Institute of Governance and Public at 12.45pm at 1 Whitehall Place, SW1, the former National Liberal Club. Then at 6.30pm the Minister for School Standards Estelle Morris will address an invited audience of 500 in the University of Warwick's Arts Centre Theatre on the topic of Modernising the Teaching Profession.

The new Warwick Institute to be launched by David Blunkett will provide government and the public sector with the level of support provided to their US equivalents by renowned organisations such as Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. It will promote and carry out research, development and teaching and education on issues of governance, public policy and public management. It will incorporate the work of Warwick's successful Local Government Centre, and will extend the work into other levels of government (regional, national and supra-national) and other areas of public service (education, health, police and criminal justice) and the voluntary sector.

Estelle Morris's lecture is the first in a series of lectures at the University of Warwick by leading figures in education. The next speaker will be former OFSTED Chief Inspector Chris Woodhead who will speak on "Improving Standards Through Inspection" on 2nd May (widely believed to be probably the day before the general election...).
