Special effects guru, Malcolm Armstrong, Managing Director of Theatrical Pyrotechnics, who has worked on the effects for Die Another Day, the latest James Bond movie, is giving live demonstrations of the chemistry behind these effects at the University of Warwick on 10th October 2002.

Dr Stefan Bon, Lecturer in Chemistry at the University of Warwick, said, "Chemistry is a great subject that can lead to exciting careers. This event will show young people that it’s not all test tubes and white coats. Chemists are employed in a variety of related fields. Malcolm is now creating amazing moments in films, and helping to make cinema history."

Malcolm will conduct experiments and give live demonstrations of explosions to show how chemical reactions on film sets work.

Malcolm Armstrong is one of the world’s leading pyrotechnic chemists and has produced the special effects for a number of block busters, including Star Wars, Harry Potter, Saving Private Ryan, Judge Dredd and Cliff Hanger.

The event has been organised by the department of Chemistry, in collaboration with the Royal Society of Chemistry and Atomic (the University of Warwick’s Student Union Chemistry Society) and members of the public are welcome to attend.
