The University of Warwick has appointed Anne Bell as Librarian to shape the future of the university’s print and electronic information needs. Effective from June 2003, the appointment will further enhance Warwick’s research and teaching expertise through information services.

Anne Bell joins Warwick from King’s College London, where she worked as Director of Library Services and Deputy Director of Information Services and Systems (ISS) since 1995. In her new role Anne will be responsible for the provision of library and information service for teaching and research. This will involve working closely with the university’s IT Services department to strategically develop resources through digital technology and enhanced provision of online services to support students and staff. She will also play a key role in the development of a new student learning and resources centre.

Dr Jonathan Nicholls, Registrar at The University of Warwick, said: “The University of Warwick warmly welcomes Anne Bell’s appointment, which is set to strengthen the quality of the University of Warwick’s library services even further, and inject additional expertise into our information provision. Anne comes from another highly successful research-led university with a significant medical school. She will bring experience across a range of library and IT provision, especially in areas that are increasingly important to Warwick, like medicine. She has also been involved in enhancing services for students, which is another important aspect of our plans at Warwick.”

Commenting on her appointment Anne Bell said: “I’m excited about my new post as Librarian at Warwick, which is one of the UK’s top universities for both research and teaching. Electronic materials and developments will continue to open up innovations in scholarly communications, and I am looking forward to tacking the challenges that lie ahead for the delivery of library services. My new position will involve developing strategies to enhance traditional library activities, and put digital developments on centre stage. We will continue to have a strong print collection, while aiming to deliver services and resources to our user community anywhere, anytime.”

Anne Bell has an M.A in Librarianship from the University of Sheffield, and prior to her position at King’s spent 12 years at Leicester University library. She pioneered the Lamda electronic document delivery service, which draws on the journal collections of 10 academic libraries in the UK, and has been active in a number of other national and regional collaborative activities. As chair of the M25 Consortium of Higher Education Libraries, which fosters co-operation amongst 39 institutions of Higher Education to improve user services, she developed remote access for students, staff and other library users through the use of technology.
