Coventry Kids Barge in on Birmingham for Charity Canal Cavalcade

Sixteen kids from Coventry will go on a fun and action packed Easter holiday from 17th-21st of March 2003 on a barge canal in Birmingham, thanks to students from the University of Warwick.

Twelve students from Warwick Volunteers, a Society made up of over 520 students and staff from the University of Warwick, have organised a five-day “Kidz Camp” canal boat holiday for kids aged between nine and ten years old from Longford Park primary school, Coventry.

The volunteers will take the children to all sorts of fun activities such as swimming, to visit Sea-Life, play games, go bowling, make a variety of arts and crafts, and generally have lots of fun cruising through the canals. The children are also encouraged to write and take home a diary.

Project Co-ordinator Ellen Mellors, a 3rd year History and Sociology student at the University of Warwick, said: “The kidz camp is exhausting and challenging work, and is undoubtedly one of the highlights of our volunteering calendar! The children taking part are given a unique chance to get away from familiar surroundings, and develop their social skills. It’s rewarding to feel that I can make such a positive impact on young people’s lives. Although the week is based on fun, the activities are also designed to help participants develop their artistic and communication skills.”

This initiative is part of Warwick Volunteers’ strategy, which co-ordinates a range of diverse voluntary activities, and is completely free of charge for the participating school pupils.

Warwick Volunteers was established in October 2002 and funded by HEFCE. The project provides opportunities for students and staff at the University to volunteer in the local community, and runs an ever-growing range of projects.
